A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR EXFOLIATING is fruit! It’s especially helpful when you have no time, or money!

Many people eat fruit in the morning, so it’s easy to utilize them for your facial exfoliation.

You can even do it while you are cooking or prepping your fruit to eat and save some time!

Using fruit is considered a chemical exfoliation. Check the page on CHEMICAL VERSUS MANUAL EXFOLIATION for more information.

If you plan to use either a chemical or fruit exfoliator…

ALWAYS FOLLOW THESE PRECAUTIONS:

  1. AVOID THE EYE AREA completely. Never apply products inside the natural socket of the eye-bone.
  2. AVOID DRIPPING IN THE EYE. Begin the application low on the chin. Move the product upwards with a brush or piece of gauze. If using low-acid fruit juice, fingers are fine for application.
  3. PLAN THE WHOLE PROCEDURE BEFORE BEGINNING! There is nothing more dangerous than using an acid exfoliator and NOT having the rinse procedure worked out ahead of time!
  4. DON’T BE A HERO! If it burns or itches too much, even if it’s only after a few seconds, RINSE IMMEDIATELY! This can happen if you have sensitive skin or are new to resurfacing. Even acids from fruit juice can irritate sensitive skin. Most people need to work up to longer sessions with glycolic peels.

Now on to EXFOLIATING WITH FRUIT!

Mangoes are an excellent and gentle skin resurfacer/exfoliator.

  • First, you will need to peel the mango. If you don’t know how, do it like this. Eat or save the fruit and save the peel for the next step.
  • Next, take the peel and rub the inside gently over your skin avoiding the eye area. The acid in the mango is what is going to eat away the dead cells.
  • Leave it on for at least 20 minutes. If your skin begins to dry, moisten it with the mango skin again, or a mist of water.
  • Wash it off and apply a moisturizer.
  • Mango can generally be applied several times a week on all but the most sensitive skin

Pineapple cores are one of my all time favorite exfoliation techniques.

  • First, Cut off all of the rough, outer layer of the pineapple and discard.
  • Slice the entire fruit lengthwise down the center, and then again, so that you have four quarters of pineapple.
  • Cut the center, hard strip from each pineapple quarter. You should end up with four long strips shaped like Toblerones.
  • The pineapple juice may feel kind of itchy, and it may sting any acne or sores. Apply a tiny dot of olive, coconut, or other protective moisturizer to those areas first, and avoid them during the treatment.
  • Rub one of the center strips all over the face, spreading the juice on the skin, avoid the eye area.
  • Wait four or five minutes and do the same thing with the next strip until you have used all four inner sections in a 20 minute period.
  • NOTE: Do not use pineapple juice over severely broken skin, or if your dermatologist has already prescribed a topical facial treatment.
  • Wash the pineapple off and apply a moisturizer. You can do this two or three times a week.

Oranges, grapefruits and lemons are all naturally acidic!

  • Squeeze a little fresh juice in your hand from any citrus fruit, and apply it directly on your skin.
  • Let it sit several minutes, remoisten with more juice, or a spritz of water.
  • Rinse and pat dry, then apply moisturizer.

That’s all there is to it!

If you feel super confident, or you are not new to resurfacing your skin with acid or chemical style peels, then here is one of my favorite, low cost, home exfoliator products.

SKIN OBSESSION 20% GLYCOLIC ACID – usually under $15, and lasts for several treatments.

To keep those dead cells from building up between your resurfacing treatments, use an AHA moisturizer.
