Taking proper care of your skin is essential if you want to have beautiful skin all your life. But if you bake in the sun, party until dawn, and eat whatever you want, your skin will definitely pay the price. Start with these 7 simple beauty rules to keep your skin young and beautiful.
- Sleep Is A Priority
- Cleanse Daily
- Moisturize Properly
- Mask Weekly
- Exfoliate Regularly
- Protect From The Sun
- Exercise Your Face
- SLEEP IS A PRIORITY
When you don’t get enough sleep, your skin will look older. Skin needs time to regenerate each night. Learn how to PRIORITIZE YOUR SLEEP and KEEP YOUR PHONE FROM MESSING WITH YOUR SLEEP.
2. CLEANSE DAILY
The skin is your body’s biggest organ, and provides protection for your entire body. Clean skin has a supple, healthy glow. ONE OF MY FAVORITE CLEANSERS, which also removes stubborn eye make-up – and is wonderful for even sensitive skin – is Fresh Soy Cleanser.
3. MOISTURIZE
A moisturizer can be as simple as coconut or olive oil. For some extra hydration – not oil – (learn the difference here), I suggest two of my favorite products, BARE MINERALS SKINLONGEVITY VITAL POWER SLEEPING GEL CREAM $38, and a bit less expensive at $25, but just as effective, is LA NEIGE WATER SLEEPING MASK. I use them in the daytime too, under moisturizer, for extra hydration.
4. MASK WEEKLY
Everyone should be applying a clay mask once or twice a week. Clay masks draw toxins and impurities from the skin. They also tighten pores and even out skin tone.
A fabulous and inexpensive clay mask is AZTEC HEALING MASK. Fresh also makes a great, Travel-Friendly, UMBRIAN CLAY BAR. It’s very easy to use and can just be packed in a carry-on suitcase; it’s great for carry-on air-travel as it doesn’t take up your liquid allowance. Here are some ways to PERSONALIZE CLAY MASKS FOR YOUR SKIN. (UPCOMING BLOG)
5. EXFOLIATE
Exfoliation can be as easy as using the soft side of a pineapple or mango on your facial skin. It is crucial to get off the dead buildup of cells on the surface. The acids in these fruits remove those dead cells. It’s very mild and excellent for sensitve skin. Do a FRUIT EXFOLIATION while you prep your morning smoothie!
For a more stronger, but still very simple and inexpensive exfoliation, try an at-home gylcolic acid peel. SKIN OBSESSION 20% GLYCOLIC ACID PEEL is inexpensive and comes with clear instructions. It’s excellent for normal skin, and works great to retrieve a youthful glow on more mature skin.
For more additional information on exfoliation, see my page on CHEMICAL VERSUS MANUAL EXFOLIATION.
6. PROTECT FROM THE SUN
A major Skin Care Must-Do is sun protection. You don’t want to look like a leather purse when you are older, even if it is Gucci.
Sun damage is cumulative, that means that every time you burn or over-expose your skin to the sun, you are creating damage that cannot be totally healed. That damage accumulates over time in the dermal layer of your skin.
IN A STUDY ON SUN EXPOSURE, one sentence sums up the whole array of sun induced aging, « Indeed, UV exposure seems to be responsible for 80% of visible facial aging signs. »
So put on sunblock, wear a hat, and don’t allow your skin to burn.
7. Exercise Your Face
Just like exercise keeps your booty lifted, facial exercise keeps your face from looking old before its time. The skin is attached to muscle via a net of fine collagen fibers, so keeping those facial muscles toned will keep your skin lifted and looking young and vibrant.
You should never pull or push the skin during exercise. This can tear and stretch the fine net of collagen fibers that hold the skin to the muscle underneath.
For an all over facial exercise regimen, start with one of my favorites from Rhanjana Khan. These yoga-type facial exercises don’t pull or push the skin.
To Finish Up…
If you follow the steps above and get plenty of healthy food and exercise, you will have beautiful skin well into your 70’s!
